IN THE FUR
* Playing GRAPE STREET PUB, Sat., Feb. 25, 2006

About three years ago, by chance, I met a drummer from New Jersey named James Billington. James was not playing in a band at the time nor had any inclination to. As for me, I had pretty much given up on the idea of a band and was planning on a solo career. I guess something sparked between us and I gave him a copy of a demo I had put together containing material I had been writing throughout the past five years. James quickly understood and believed in the kind of music I was writing, Bowie-esque vocals layered over a very melodic/rock kind of sound. We got to work, just the two of us, and then we started searching for the right musicians to complete the vision which clouded our thoughts day and night.
Through a friend I heard about a guitarist named Chris Norris, he was fronting a band in Maryland. I went to one of their shows and that was it, I knew he was the guy we were looking for. After passing the demo on to him, it wasn’t long before Chris moved to New Jersey. With me on lead vocal/guitar, Chris (vocal/lead guitar) and James (drums), In The Fur was born.
The name was derived from a song I had written. Fur is a very comforting, warm, glamorous but loud piece of clothing. The band, in a way, follows those same lines. The three of us have formed a bond, it is comforting to have found “brothers” with similar but different backgrounds but who have the same goal “TO MAKE GREAT ALBUMS”. Together we have been working on the songs I have been writing along with the songs that Chris has written and we have created a sound that is recognizable but also has a unique flavor that has the ability to stand the test of time.
Our influences are very similar: Beatles, David Bowie, T-Rex, Roxy Music, ELO, Rolling Stones, etc
We have played shows in Philadelphia (Kyber Pass. Pontiac Grille, 218, Five Spot, Whiskey Dix, The Northstar Bar, Grape Street Pub, etc) and have branched out to some venues in New Jersey, Maryland and New York. We recently recorded a 4 song demo at the Clubhouse Recording Studio in upstate New York and signed a production deal with a team of producers from Nashville named Ken Koomer (ex drummer from the band Wilco) and Charlie Bronco.
Since then we have been practicing, playing shows, putting our web site together, doing photo shoots, and just recently shot our first video. We have also just finished recording an additional 4 song demo on our own at Metropolitan Studio in Bryn Mawr. Our plan is to combine the two demos into one so we have some product to pass around at future shows.
We are three hungry musicians who are consumed with music. In The Fur are not trying to be local heroes, we are just doing what we do best. Our live shows grab the attention of everyone in the audience, yet we will not stop crafting our performances. In The Fur is ready to step up to the next level (record deal) and ready to do what we were put on this earth to do “MAKE GREAT ALBUMS”.
